Our Pre-Christmas programs have been going off like Asha running to her pre-game pie (endearing yet elite)! We have seen great numbers down at our Elite Skills Clinic. If you haven’t been yet there is still one more session, our final session before we break for Christmas is on the 7th of December at Crawford Oval, 6:30pm. Following this we will head over to Melbourne Uni for a BBQ and a chat with Gwynney and the Pres about the 2024 season, if you want the inside scoop on our grand plans for 2024 Flag campaign then you better get down! Run Club has seen the Mugs working hard every Saturday Morning for the past month. We have been so impressed to see everyone down at the gym or at Crawford and getting that pre-Christmas work in. Run Club’s final session will be 9th of December, 9:30am, Crawford Oval. Both Run Club and Elite Skills Clinic will give our players the extra edge heading into the offical pre-season which will kick off in January.

Freya Summers - Senior Assistant Coach Hailing from South Australia, Freya joins our 2024 coaching line up and we couldn’t be more excited. From being offered the job on the spot in her interview, it’s safe to say that we see big things coming for Freya! Outside of footy, Freya is a teacher and specialises in a trauma informed approach. Freya describes that her coaching philosophy is founded in building relationships with players and she has a strong knowledge of both technical and structural aspects of the game. Welcome to the Mugars Freya!

Dinan McMahon - Reserves Assistant Coach Our President may be making a name for herself regarding the lengths she will go to secure high quality coaches for MUWFC. First it was that incident with Gwynney and the gyno…. but we will leave Dinan to tell you all about his exploits with our esteemed President! Having played for a number of years with our brother the Uni Blacks before crossing the ditch to West Brunswick, Dinan is known for playing with intelligence and professionalism. Dinan will continue his playing career in 2024 and won’t be around as regularly as our other coaches, so make sure you take full advantage of him when you see him! In spite of baring a strong allegiance to the Brisbane Lions, MUWFC are thrilled to welcome to Dinan to our 2024 coaching squad.

Brendan Smith - Skills Development and Senior Assistant Coach Brendan or BJ as we are sure he will affectionately become known, is joining us from Geelong to take on skills and development in 2024! BJ has been coaching for 10 years and had a lengthy umpiring career prior to that. We are sure that BJ’s experience and in-depth knowledge of the game will be invaluable to the Mugars in 2024. Those who have attended our Elite Skills Clinic will have already met BJ. Welcome Brendan!

2024 Committee IntroductionsFor the first time in a long time, MUWFC are heading into the 2024 season with a full committee (as soon as Noack lets go of Footy Ops that is), as we couldn’t be more excited! Please join us in congratulating our 2024 office holders: President: Maddy Noack With a keen eye for detail and a tackle you wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of, Maddy will led our club in 2024! Maddy grew up on a property in NSW and is a Social Worker by trade. Vice President: Rozanne Mentzel It’s not often you see a flautist on a football committee, but we really do have it all here at MUWFC. Rozi is one South African who you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of, Rozi’s sense of humour an acute sense of justice will be key features of term! Treasurer: Fiona Hudson An accountant by trade and MUWFC’s 2023 number 1 Fan, Fi is a welcome addition to the MUWFC team. Coming on board with her succession plan already in place, Fi is a fierce advocate for women in sport and you can always hear her cheering from the sidelines! Secretary (and Uniforms): Olivia Odgers Coming to the Mugars in 2023 Liv has made a name for herself as someone the club can always count on. Taking on not one, but two of the hardest committee roles for 2024 we are incredibly grateful for Liv’s contribution to the club. VAFA Women’s StrategyIn November VAFA released there 2024 strategy for Women’s footy. The vision from the VAFA is to “grow women’s football into a competition our community can be passionate and proud of”. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, or can’t be bothered, fret not, we have summarised the key points here for you: Feedback provided to VAFA from the 2023 Women’s divisions were centred around, length of the season, playing experience, grading and competitive balance, club environment and under-age player pathways. And what are the VAFA planning to do about this? Well, glad you asked because here are the key changes that will take affect in 2024: Reducing the number of players on the field in Premier Competitions to 16 players (from 18). This move is to align VAFA with VFLW and AFLW who also play 16 a-side. A clubs’s reserves team may be fixtured in the divisional section if they are deemed not competitive or sustainable for the Premier Competition. There will be no VAFA Thirds completion in 2024. If clubs wish to enter a third team they will be fixtured into a division section that reflects their competitiveness.
How does this affect MUWFC? Not hugely in regard to the first two points, VAFA have not released yet how many players may be selected into a squad but MUWFC will continue as normal. The dissolving of the Women’s Thirds section, while disappointing, is something we anticipated. The committee will continue to discuss how we navigate this change but we assure our members that there is always a place for everyone at MUWFC! Upcoming EventsThe MUWFC Events Team are excited to bring you a range of events in season 2024! We’ve been working away behind the scenes (guided by our community’s feedback) to plan 5 pre-season events, as well as several in-season get-togethers (more of that in our next newsletter!). We wanted to get these dates to you ASAP, so you can begin pencilling them in as we look to 2024. Once we hit the new year, a second round of ‘save the dates’ for in-season events will be circulated. To briefly summarise…here’s what’s coming your way in 2024! What’s on at the UniTrans art, archives and creative practices: a collective conversation In the contemporary global political climate, trans identities are increasingly visible and affirmed but are also targeted and subject to heightened violence. What is often lost in this political paradox is the unique contributions made by trans academics, artists and activists. This in-person roundtable intervenes by centring and celebrating trans history, cultural production, and creativity. It brings together renowned trans scholars who will approach these issues through their current research and practice, helping us to collectively think about trans pasts, presents, and futures. More info here The SheShaka exhibition: Exploring gendered and cultural barriers to surfing for women Gender equity and cultural diversity in surfing is an ongoing issue. Women, girls and gender diverse people from diverse backgrounds face barriers to feeling safe and welcome in the surf. This stunning set of photographs by women and girls from the far west coast of Victoria draws powerful parallels between the gender inequity experienced when surfing and the gender inequity faced by women on land. The exhibition runs 9:00am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday until Friday 08 December 2023. More info here

MUWFC wish to thank Bronte Ryan for all her support and work with MUWFC during her time as a coach. Bronte took on the Head Coach role for the 2023 season and we can’t thank her enough for all the work and effort she put into the club in a tumultuous year. Her hard work, dedication, and ability to lighten any situation with her infectious laugh, are all crucial to her success as a coach. Bronte won’t be in an official coaching role in 2024, although we look forward to seeing her around, and seeing what incredible things she goes on to do! Thank you Bronte! |

Alistair Hardie came to MUWFC in 2021 for his first ever coaching role and he immediately became part of the fabric of the club. After 12 months in WA he came back to MUWFC in 2023 as our Senior Assistant Coach. Al stood strong for MUWFC in 2023, a beacon of stability and strength. Al took on the club values and lived the club way, supporting anyone and everyone and being a voice for those who needed it. In 2024 Al has been appointed as the Under 17 Premier Division Boys coach, at Waverley Blues. We are so proud of Al, his journey and everything he has been able to achieve. We wish him all the best and look forward to our paths crossing again in the future |

After a 3 year long partnership, many hours of hard work, training and games spent in the freezing cold and pouring rain, we say farewell to Motus Life as our offical High Performance Partner. Motus have been pivotal to the success of MUWFC over the past 3 years, the dedication of their staff, their willingness to be involved in our community are things we are incredibly grateful for. The staff at Motus Life are exceptional practitioners and we note, that this is a farewell, not a goodbye. MUWFC highly recommend Motus Life as a space for those wanting to push for elite level performance and an informal relationship remains between MUWFC and Motus Life.
